Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 40 hours a week

Wage Range: $80,000 - $100,000 annually

Compensation subject to annual review and increase based on inflation, cost of living, merit and performance. Compensation offered may vary depending on the applicant's level of experience, qualifications and other factors. Potential for discretionary annual bonus.

Position Summary

Our Pipes & Drums program is one of the leading programs of its kind in Canada and has been in existence since 1915. With the help of world-renowned piping and drumming teachers, aspiring pipers and drummers can begin their journey at St. Andrew's and graduate with a lifelong hobby of piping or drumming, with many students going on to perform in the world's leading pipe bands or joining the school's association pipe band, SACA. Our Middle School Band and Drumming programs are designed to challenge and engage students who are excited to begin playing a band instrument, with the more experienced players working on band repertoire that is both challenging and fun.

Job Duties

  • Provide oversight and leadership to all piping and drumming programming, including championing its vision, philosophy, and goals
  • Select and interpret musical works
  • Proven experience creating musical compositions
  • Work collaboratively with students and staff in Middle and Upper School to ensure the program's alignment with and its advancement of our strategic priorities, which include seeing this program as a key differentiator within the context of independent school education and a signature traditional program at the college

Experience/Skills and other requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in fine arts, music composition, music or related field
  • Member of a Pipe Band Association or related Association
  • 5+ years of competition experience and/or success at high levels as a soloist on the bagpipes, experience leading pipe bands or sections, and particular expertise in the playing and teaching of piobaireachd
  • Experience or proficiency with instruments other than bagpipes would be considered an asset
  • Thorough understanding of music theory and technologies such as Sibelius and Garageband is essential for the position
  • Must have detailed knowledge of pipe band drill, dress, and deportment
  • Ability to work alongside other members of the arts community to produce sophisticated productions such as our annual Celtic Night is required.
